  • Basketball - invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith.
  • Dr. James Naismith - a Canadian physical education professor at International Young Men’s Christian Association Training School (YMCA) in Springfield Massachusetts.
  • 1950 Dribbling - became a major part of the game as ball manufacturing improved the ball’s shape and handling.
  • Tony Hinkle - introduced the use of the orange-colored ball for greater player and spectator visibility.
  • Passing - an essential skill to transport the ball to finish goal.

  • Shooting - in playing basketball, the goal of the player is to put the ball through the ring to earn points.
  • Types of Shoot:
    1. Push Shot (Two Hands)

  • Steal - to take possession of the ball from the opponent.
  • Rebound - to take possession of the ball after missed shot.
  • Player Positions:
    1. Point Guard
    2. Shooting Guard

  • Point Guard - acts as the team leader. He knows every team member’s strengths and makes sure that the agreed play is executed.
  • Shooting Guard - designated shooter from the outside.
  • Small Forward - all around player.
  • Power Forward - Is the go-to person in the shaded area. The shaded area is the floor underneathe the goal.
  • Center - usually the tallest and bulkiest player in the team. He is assigned mostly to the shaded area. He is the last line of defense nearest the goal.
  • The object of the game is to outscore the opposing team within the given time period.
  • International Basketball Federation (FIBA) - implements a ten-minute per quarter rule.
  • National Basketball Association of the United States - implements a 12-minute per quarter rule.
  • Professional League - the basketball league where players are paid to play.
  • A team is assigned one of the two courtsides where their bench can be found.
  • Game starts via a jumpball where usually the tallest players jump against each other to tap the thrown ball towards a teammate.
