  • What does identification mean?
    When someone conforms to the demands from a social role from society like policeman and teacher.No change in personal opinion
  • What does Internalisation mean?

    When someone publicly change their behaviour to fit in with the group and doesn't change when the group isn't present. An internal (private) and external (public) change of behaviour. Deepest level of conformity. permanent change
  • What does compliance mean ?
    When someone publicly agrees with the group’s behaviour or views but privately disagrees.Temporary change.

  • what is the study for conformity?
    Asch’s line study 1951
  • What is the aim of Asch’s line study
    To investigate if people would conform to the majority in situations where the answer was obvious
  • What was the procedure of Asch’s study?
    • Participants were in groups of 6-8
    • Each group was presented with a standard line and 3 comparison lines
    • ppts had to say aloud which comparison lines matched standard lines in length.
    • Each group had one ppts and the rest were confederates
    • the ppts was seated second last or last and didnt know the other ppts were confederates
    • confederates all gave the same incorrect answer
    • confeserates were told to give the incorrect answer on 12 out of 18 trials.
