  • Introduction
    The introduction to a technical report is important, since it establishes the topic and the purpose of the project or research study for the reader
  • Introduction should
    1. Introduce the topic and provide the context
    2. Explain the problem and/or motivation
    3. State the aims and objectives
    4. Indicate the purpose of the report
    5. Provide a brief outline of the report structure
  • Rationale
    A set of reasons or a logical basis for the project or study
  • Context
    • Background information necessary to understand the problem
  • Problem definition
    • Refer to previous projects/studies to identify the gap your work is trying to fill
  • Aims
    Overall statements of intent, written in broad terms to set out what you hope to achieve
  • Objectives
    Specific statements that define measurable outcomes, indicating the steps to achieve the aims
  • Hypothesis
    What could be true as a solution to the defined problem, a piece of missing information, or the experimental validation of something theoretically established
  • Research questions
    Pinpoint exactly what you want to find out and give your work a clear focus and purpose
  • Purpose of the report
    To communicate the outcomes of the project and provide a firm design basis or offer conclusions on a proposed hypothesis
  • Report structure overview
    • Provide a brief outline of the sections in the report
  • An introduction should be relatively short, a couple of pages at most
