Judgement

• God is the judge of humanity. Upon death, it is believed that all Jewish people will be judged by God
• This final judgement decided where the Jewish body/soul will go
• ”God will bring every deed into judgement… whether it is good or evil“
• Many Jewish teachers suggests that basically nothing happens after death and that out souls and bodies will be resurrected.
• there’s a great image that after death, everyone listens to Moses teach the Torah. For the righteous, this is heaven; for the wicked, this is hell
• the spiritual afterlife is called Olam Ha’Ba, which means the world to come
• one view is that good people will enter Gan Eden (heaven) and wicked people will go to Gehanna (hell) after the last judgement
• The Messianic age is a term used by Jewish people to describe a future time on earth
• In this ideal and perfect word all the difficult problems will be solved, there is no crime, no war, no poverty
• All Jewish people will return from their exile among the nations to their home in Israel
• in Olam Ha’Ba, the whole world will recognise the Jewish god as the only true God, and the Jewish religion as the only true religion.
• Some Jews believe there is an actual person that will bring about this change, others believe it is a period of time
• Characteristics of the Messiah; orthodox view

  • he will be born(a real person)
  • he will be Jewish
  • have the authority of God
  • be charismatic and inspire others to follow their example
  • Judge fairly and make righteous decisions
  • be a ruler and manage to introduce peace
  • restore the lord to the Jewish people
• A time to come; reform view

  • the messianic age is not a person but a time
  • during this time there will be no more war
  • no one will be persecuted
  • everyone will have enough food and water
  • judaism will be the religion of the people.
• When will the messiah appear? orthodox

  • some jews believe that God has already decided when the Messiah will appear on Earth but threat the exact date is unknown to humans
  • after a time of war and hardship
  • when humans have proved themselves to be worthy of him by improving their actions and behaviour
  • If a single Shabbat is in severed correctly by every Jewish person
  • a few think he will appear when humanity is most in need
  • the Messiah must arrive before the year 6000 from the time of creation
