  • Playing a sport requires a lot of time and energy. Some people may think this would distract student-athletes from schoolwork. However, the opposite is true. Sports require memorization, repetition and learning skillsets that are directly relevant to class work. Also, the determination and goal-setting skills a sport requires can be transferred to the classroom.

    A structured physical activity, usually competitive, that requires complex skills and a high level of individual commitment and motivation

    • Requires complex skills - have to be learned for an individual to become a performer
    • High level of individual commitment and motivation - top athletes train for long hours for many years and often have to make sacrifices
  • Throughout history, sport has played a variety of important functions in society: as a form of recreation, as a preparation for war or the hunt; or later as a substitute for war. Some sports such as wrestling, date back thousands of years, others have arisen and being adapted from other activities. Today there are hundreds of different sports and the job of defining what a sport becomes very difficult.
  • Rules in sports
    Provide an agreement of understanding to competition, define what is allowed or not allowed to occur during situations on and off the court, govern anything from wearing proper uniforms to how to keep score during games of different levels of competition, apply to players, coaches and officials, and vary among different sports and age groups
  • Importance of rules and regulations in sports
    • Rules for Officials - Officials should understand the signaling and whistling codes for the sports they govern, track scores, keep time and resolve in-game discrepancies based on the rules
    • Rules for Players - Vary depending on the sport they play and the level they play at, prevent bias against things such as age, development and skills on teams
    • Injury Prevention - Rules govern things such as access to working safety gear, including helmets, padding and mouth guards
    • Rules for Coaches - Coaches should fully understand the rules of the sport they coach, to be able to successfully train a team and mentor players during a game
  • Categories of sports
    • Individual sports - Higher amount of discipline, self-confidence, focus and passion, the individual player is solely responsible for winning or losing
    • Dual or Team sports - Many variables are considered to determine the success or failure of the team, although individual qualities and skills are helpful, performance will not rely on a single talent, a team's performance or success depends on the collective effort of all the players
