cognitive priming

Cards (4)

  • Cognitive Priming - violent images provide ready-made scripts about aggression which are stored in memory (Huesmann 1998) and triggered with aggression cues. Process is mostly automatic.
  • Fischer and Greitmeyer (2006) looked at the priming of aggressive scripts in memory. Male pps listened to songs featuring aggressively derogatory lyrics about women. Compared with when they listened to neutral lyrics, pps recalled more negative qualities about women and behaved more aggressively towards a female confederate.
  • Bushman and Anderson found those who regularly watch violent media access stored scripts more readily, suggesting that they are more likely to interpret environmental cues more readily
  • Fischer and Greitmeyer's procedure was replicated with women, using ‘men-hating’ lyrics and found similar results.
