• unanimity- when 2 or more people are in agreement
• in Asch's original experiment, the confederates all gave the same incorrect answer
• Asch changed the procedure by breaking the unanimity and providing the participant with an ally
• this ally was a confederate but was told to respond differently to the other confederates
• conformity decreased with unanimity
• when an ally gave the correct answer, conformity went from 32% to an average of 5.5%
