CAE STUDY- WHALING IN THE ARTIC

Cards (5)

  • What is a successful small scale example of Sustainable Management either in the Artic or the Antarctic ?
    Whaling
  • Whaling
In 1986 , 30,000 more whales were killed despite the ban. Most of them were caught in Japan and Norway however IVC allowed small number of whales to be killed for indigenous communities in Canada and Greenland. In the 20th Century whaling was at an all time high. The ships were used in production of cosmetics and chemicals. Traditional whaling is used through small boats using simple harpoon. They use it for their oil meat and bones. This makes it more sustainable.
  • Whaling 2nd Paragraph
In 1946 the international wailing commission (IWC) was set up to conserve the amount being killed and to control the whaling industry. In 1986 the IWC initiated a ban on commercial whaling however countries continued which meant the ban wasn't successful. For example countries like Japan continued to catch whales for what they called scientific research.
  • Whaling 3rd Paragraph
In 2008 Clyde River Baffin Island in norther Canada , the Marine Wildlife Sanctuary became the country's first marine wildlife area. Up to 2000 bowheads stop at northern Canada on their migration. This sanctuary is rich in zooplankton which is what whales eat. There are also polar bears, narwhal and seals. 1000 indigenous people live in Clyde River and they successfully killed a bowhead whale and were congratulated by an environmental organisation called Greenpeace. They said that 'small-scale' whale hunting is sustainable for whale populations
  • In my opinion I think that the Marine Wildlife Sanctuary is the most sustainable strategy as they managed the whale populations
