Basketball
A team sport where the player aims to shoot a ball through a basket horizontally positioned to score points while following the set of rules
Basketball was invented by James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts
December 1891
Nine players played in each team and a wooden peach basket affixed to the wall was the first goal used
In 1897-1898, teams of five became standard and the sport spread nationwide
Basketball court
Size of the court is 94 feet (28.65 m) long and 50 feet (15.24 m) wide
The top of the hoop is 10 feet (3.05 m) above the ground
The regulation backboard is 6 feet (1.83 m) wide by 4 feet (1.22 m) tall
The inner rectangle of the backboard is 24 inches (61 cm) wide by 18 inches (46 cm) tall
The basketball hoop (goal) is made up of a horizontal circular metal rim with a net hanging from it and is mounted 10 feet (3.05 m) above floor level
Dribbling
Allows you to advance with the ball and move around the court while you are in possession of the ball. This involves bouncing the ball off the floor with your hands.
Proper dribbling technique
Dribble the ball with your hand using the tips of your fingers
Use the wrist and the forearm to push the ball while covering the court
Do not use the whole hand to avoid losing control of the ball
Spread your fingers to allow full control of the ball as it dribbles
Dribble the ball on one side of your body and not right in front
Shooting
The first basic skill to be learned. Every basketball player loves to shoot the ball and is the most practiced skill in the game.
Improving shooting skills
Keep BEEF (balance your body, elbow in, eyes on the target and follow through) when shooting the ball
Concentrate and be relaxed on the basket
Find a position to have a good shot and then take it
Keep proper balance when shooting the ball. Follow through on every shot you take
Running
One of the basic skills in basketball because speed defines the best player in this sport. This skill is used in offensive or defensive plays, passing, receiving, shooting, or rebounding a ball.
Passing
One of the important skills. This skill maximizes the involvement of all players in setting up a play to earn a successful shots and points for the whole team.
Rebounding
One of the major skills of the game. Grabbing a rebound means making your team gain a chance to shoot again while the other team actually loses it. It is your ability to jump with power to gain possession of the ball when the ball bounces to the rim after a failed shot before it touches the floor.
Officiating staff
Minimum number is five: a referee, umpire, scorer, timer, and shootclockoperator
Referee is the official in charge who controls the game, tosses the ball up to the center jump at the start, and has the power to make decisions
Whenever a foul occurs, the official is required by the rules to give the appropriate signal
