state or condition of being physically sound and healthy, especially as the result of exercises and proper nutrition.
Fitness
can also be defined as …health-related or skill-related.
Fitness
Are those that are designed as improving health, wellness, and one’s quality of life.
Health-related FITNESS

• Muscular strength
• Muscular endurance
• Flexibility
• Body composition
Health-related fitness components
Essential to athletic performance and the ability to perform activities of daily living.
Skill-related FITNESS
• Speed
• Agility
• Coordination
• Balance
• Power, and
• Reaction time
Skill-related fitness components
This is how long it takes for an individual or an object to travel a certain distance, and the faster something moves, the greater its speed.
SPEED
In sporting terms, speed is the rate at which someone can move all or part of their body when performing a movement or covering a distance.
Speed
Speed = Distance/Time
Speed is measured in meters per second (m/s).
Measuring SPEED
3 Main Types of SPEED
Accelerative Speed
Pure Speed
Speed Endurance
•the speed with which you start moving faster, which is seen in sprints of up to 30 meters.
Accelerative Speed
your maximum speed, which is seen in sprints of up to 60 meters.
Pure Speed
being able to maintain your maximum speed or near your maximum speed for a period of time, which is seen during sprints with short recovery periods in between.
Speed Endurance
Is the ability of a sports player to move and change direction quickly, precisely without a significant loss of speed, balance, or body control.
AGILITY
Agility fitness combines power, strength, balance, flexibility, reaction time, coordination, anticipation, and muscular control.
Agility is critical in any sport that requires rapid changes in direction, deceleration, and acceleration, such as basketball, football, and gymnastics.
Agility has both movement and reactive elements. Meaning agility must involve a reaction to a stimulus, for example, a goalkeeper reacting and saving a penalty kick in football.
SPEED AND AGILITY DRILLS
3 Cone Shuffle
NFL Combine Drill
2 Foot Dot Jumps
Four Corner Drill
Figure 8 Run
Is the ability to move the body parts swiftly while applying the maximum force of the muscles. It refers to a person’s ability to transfer energy into force at a rapid pace also known as explosive body movement. Power is a combination of both speed and muscular strength.
POWER
•Examples of power:
Doing the shot put in track and field
Jumping vertically to hit a volleyball
Throwing a baseball at a high speed
Performing kettlebell swings builds power in your hips and upper body by combining strength training with a fast and explosive movement.
Kettlebell swings
When you do jump squats, you’re building up lots of muscle and strength in your lower body. This exercise helps train your legs to distribute power through the rest of your body when you jump up.
Jump squats
Lift dumbbells, use weight machines, or add weights when you do things like squats, burpees, or pushups to create resistance and increase your power.
Weight training
Relates to the time between one of your senses recognizing a stimulus and your body moving in response.
Is the ability to reach or respond quickly to what you hear, see, or feel. For example, stealing a base in baseball.
REACTION TIME
Examples of reaction time
Catching a ball when someone throws it to you suddenly
Swerving out of the way when something suddenly appears in your path
Sprinting as soon as you hear the start pistol in a race
Stand in front of a soccer goal and have others try to kick or roll a ball into the goal. React quickly to stop the ball from going into the goal.
Goal-keeping
Have someone drop a ball at shoulder height. Your job is to catch the ball after it bounces once on the floor but before it can bounce a second time.
Ball drop
While this might not be what you consider to be a standard form of exercise, playing video games that involve a lot of action or puzzles that require you to think quickly can help you improve your reaction time.
Video games
refers to your ability to adjust your body position to remain upright. It deals with proprioception, or knowing where your body is in space, and being able to make adjustments to your position as your center of gravity changes during movement.
BALANCE
Examples of balance
Being able to walk in a straight line without veering to the side
Standing up from sitting in a chair without using your hands for support
Landing on both feet after jumping.
Doing yoga improves your balance by having you hold certain poses for extended periods of time. Yoga also improves your flexibility, which is crucial in strengthening balance.
Yoga
When you do lunges, it’s important to concentrate on maintaining your center of gravity to avoid falling forward or to the side. Lunges will improve your balance by strengthening your hip flexors and abdominal muscles.
Lunges
Stand on one leg and raise your opposite arm above your head. Hold this position for as long as you can, rest, then repeat. Tighten your core to improve your balance.
Single leg balance
Refers to a person’s ability to perform complex movements due to the working together of the nervous system and the muscles of the body. This is also referred to as a person’s ability to do two things at the same time.
COORDINATION
Examples of coordination
Catching a frisbee while running
Dribbling a ball while moving
Jumping and hitting a ball
To help strengthen your hand-eye coordination, grab a friend or family member and take turns throwing and catching a ball. Or if you’re alone, practice catching by throwing a ball against a wall.
Playing catch
Doing jump rope is a good exercise to improve the coordination between your eyes, hands, and feet.

For a more fun and unique exercise, try your hand at juggling things like balls or scarves to improve your hand-eye coordination.
