  • What is a Tsunami? 

    A series of ocean waves caused by an earthquake at sea.
  • How do Tsunamis form?
    1. an earthquake occurs
    2. Land moves upwards along fault.
    3. Displaces water upwards
    4. Water is driven by energy beneath surface moving quickly.
    5. Water moving to open ocean can travel for km with no effect until it hits land.
    6. Wave moves towards shore.
    7. Reaches shallow water and friction from seabed causes wave to slow and gain height - creating Tsunami.
  • Where do most Tsunamis occur?
    80% occur within Pacific Oceans "ring of fire"
  • Is the first wave of a Tsunami the strongest?
    No successive waves get bigger and stronger.

    Speeds of 805km/h - as fast as a jet plane.
