origins of psychology

Cards (5)

  • wundt's lab>>>
    - n 1879, Wilhelm Wundt opened the first ever lab dedicated to psychological enquiry in Leipzig Germany
    - this was significant because i maked the beginning of scientific psychology ( studying of the mind, behaviour and experience) and was separated from its philisophical roots
    - his aim was to study the nature of human consciousness. he did this with his method, intropsection
    - introspection~ the first systematic experimental attempt to study the mind be breaking up conscious awareness into basic structures of thoughts, images and sensations
  • standardised procedures>>>
    - his main objectives were to try and develop theories about mental processes e.g. language and perception
    - him and his co-worker recorded their experience with various stimuli e.g. objects and sounds
    - they'd divide their observations into 3 categories;
    - thoughts
    - images
    - sensations
    - e.g ppt might be given a ticking metronome and they would report this based of these categories
  • structuralism>>>
    - structuralism occurred when isolating the structure of consciousness in this way. (in the 3 catergoreis)
    - the stimuli Wundt and his co-workers were experiencing were always presented in the same order and the same instructions were issued to all participants.
  • ao3 scientific methods>>>
    - methods were systematic, objective and well-controlled
    - all introspection were recorded in the controlled lab experiment - so there's no extraneous variables
    - all procedures were standardisedm- so all ppts got same info and were tested in the same way
  • ao3 subjective data>>>
    - wundt relied on ppt to self -report their mental processes - this is subjective because its influenced by personal perspective
    - ppts may have hidden some of their thoughts
    - difficult to establish meaningful 'laws of behaviour' from such data - which is useful to predict future behaviour ( one of the aims of science)
    - ... suggests that Wundts efforts were flawed and don't meet the criteria of scientific enquiry
