MULTI STORE MODEL

Cards (11)

  • who created the MSM?
    Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
  • what are the three main stores?
    sensory register, STM + LTM
  • draw the diagram
    draw a diagram
  • what is the coding, capacity and storage of the sensory registor?
    - depends on the sense being used
    - very large capacity
    - 1/2 second duration
  • what is the coding, capacity and storage of the short term memory?
    - acoustic
    - holds 5-9 items
    - 18-30s duration
  • what is the coding, capacity and storage of the long term memory ?
    - semantic
    - holds unlimited
    - permanent
  • Explain Murdocks study - serial position curve
in the Murdock serial position curve experiment, participants are presented with a list of words and then asked to recall them in any order. Murdock found that words presented at the beginning (primacy) and end (recency) of the list were better remembered than those in the middle. This reflects the primacy effect (due to rehearsal of words at the beginning) and the recency effect (due to words at the end being in short-term memory).
  • Clinical evidence - Clive Wearing
he got a viral infection in his brain which led to having amnesia
    - 30s memory
    stm is fully damaged
    ltm is partially damaged
  • AO3: Weakness - artificial materials
the use of artificial materials in msm studies include using word lists and meaningless tasks
this is not reflective of remembering in real life so this manner of assessment isn't valid
    lacks external validity
  • AO3: Weakness - oversimplifies LTM
large amount of evidence to suggest LTM isn't a unitory store
other research such as clive wearing suggests we have different types of ltm - episodic, semantic, procedural
  • AO3: strength - practical structure
the structure of the model makes it easy to conceptualise and investigate different aspects of memory
the clear structure allows researchers to apply to their research
