    widespread fear, often irrational, due to threats to the values, interests and well being of a community or society
  • how have moral panics changed the public perception of crime?
    video nasties moral panic 1982-85 led to the video recording act 1984 which meant all released films published for home media had to pass age classification by the BBFC
    paedophilia moral panic lead to child sex offender disclosure scheme (sarahs law)
    Islamic terrorism moral panic 2000s led to the counter terrorism act 2008 which was for the removal of probation, post charge questioning and longer terrorism sentences
  • structure of society (demographic and cultural changes)
    one huge demographic change has been the increase of immigration in the UK which has lead to social issues:
    racism: the equality act 2010 means people may not be unfairly discriminated against due to their colour, nationality or ethnic origins
    FGM: the serious crime act 2015 amended the FGM act to provide statutory guidance on FGM to increase awareness and compliance with good practise
    forced marriage: anti-social behaviour, crime and policing act 2014 made forced marriages illegal in england, wales and scotland
