  • Gautama, also known as Buddha, sat under the enlightenment tree and realized the truth of the Four Noble Truths. He sat under the tree for 49 days and nights. He devoted his life to teaching people until he died at the age of 80.
  • Buddhist temples are called Viharas. They are places of worship and meditation and they are designed to symbolize fire, air, Earth, water and wisdom. Styles of Viharas are Pagodas or Stupas.
  • Eightfold path contains eight steps to achieve enlightenment.:
    Right view- Know where you want to go
    right intention- Know why you are going there
    right speech- Abstain from harsh words
    right action- Avoid the wrong decisions
    right livelihood- Live a harmless life
    right effort- Mental discipline
    right mindfulness- Keep on your path
    right concentration- Self aware and staying calm
  • The Four Nobel truths are:
    • First truth - Dukkha ; Accepting that there is suffering . Greed, Ignorance and hatred are the forms of suffering
    • Second truth - Samudaya ; Find the cause of the suffering
    • Third truth - Nirodha ; Suffering can end with a solution
    • Fourth truth - Magga ; The eightfold path
  • Malala Yousafzai is a good example of someone who has used some of the eightfold path teachings such as using the right speech by speaking for the people who had lost voices, using the right action by campaigning for education for all and she had the right mindfulness because she kept on her path to gain proper rights
