    £4.6b in 2018 £4.9b in 2023. This comes from general taxation.
  • CRCs
    CRCs were private rehabilitation companies on contract with the Ministry of Justice that were being paid for meeting rehabilitation aims. 19 of 21 CRCs failed to ahieve their rehabilitation aims, with some, supervising their offenders by telephone.
    2018 House of Commons Public Account Committee reported concluded that up to £342m had been spent on CRCs without clear benefts. Overall by 2020 the Ministry of Justice had spent over £500m more than expected on the CRCs.
    This was eneded and reorganised into 12 regions.

    There are always 250k offenders on probation that are deemed safe enough to serve or commplete the sentence in the community.
  • Working practices (national and local reach)
    The NPS is working regionally and locally to the same national standards. The NPS is responsible for:
    1. Preparting pre-sentence reports for the courts, to help them select the most appropriate sentence for the offender.
    2. Managing approved premises for offenders whose sentence includes a residence requirement.
    3. Assesing prisoners to prepare them for release on licence. At that point they come under the NPS supervision.
    4. Helping offenders serving community sentences to meet the court's requirements.
    5. When an offender receives a custodial sentence of 12 months or more for a serious violent or sexual crime, or is detained as a mental health patient, the NPS emphasises the victim's wellbeing.
