divorce and remarriage

• christian views:

  • divorce is accepted but discouraged (mark 10:9)
  • ministers are free to choose whether to conduct a remarriage service
  • catholics believe that marriage is a lifelong commitment that only ends at death - jesus stated that no one should separate what god had joined
• jewish views:

  • in orthodox, the husband must give his wife a 'get' (document of divorce) - encouraged by rabbis
  • remarriage is encouraged (after 90 days) as the torah refers to remarriage after the death of a partner
  • divorce is the last resort
