  • What are the 4 definitions of abnormality?

  • What is statistical infrequency?
    It refers to a distribution curve of the population, and when someone doesn’t fit in the average, they show abnormal characteristics. i.e only 2% of the population have an IQ below 70, therefore they’re very abnormal and can even receive diagnosis of psychological disorder
  • What is deviation from social norms?
    Concerns behaviour that is different from the accepted standards of behaviour in our society. They are specific to where we live as it’s not often we have a universal standards of norms. An example would be APD, with one of its symptoms being ‘inability to conform to lawful and culturally normative ethical behaviour‘ I.e aggression
  • What is deviation from ideal mental health as described by Rosenham and Seligman?

    this happens when a person can n longer put up with daily demands of life. signs include: maladaptive behaviour, severe personal distress, violation of moral standards and observer discomfort. i.e Intellectual disability disorder (IDD)
