  • Verbal - generally defined as verb forms used as another part of speech.
  • 3 kinds of verbals:
    1. Gerunds
    2. Participles
    3. Infinitives
  • Gerunds
    • Verb forms ending in - ing used as nouns.
  • Gerund Phrase
    • Gerund with modifiers or a complement, all acting together as a noun.
  • Gerunds and Infinitives may be used as:
    1. Subject of the sentence
    2. Subject Complement
    3. Direct Object
    4. Object of the preposition
    5. Appositive
  • As a subject
    • Comes before the verbs both action and linking verbs.
  • As a subject complement
    • Comes after the linking verb.
  • As a direct object
    • Comes after action words or transitive verbs.
  • As an appositive
    • Always between 2 commas.
  • As an object of the preposition
    • Comes after the preposition.
  • Infinitives
    • Form of a verb that generally appears with the word "to" and acts as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
  • Participles - verbals that functions as an adjective.
  • 2 types of participles:
    1. Present Participle
    2. Past Participle
  • Present Participle
    • Always ending in - ing.
  • Past Participle
    • Has already happened.
