    • In the aftermath of the French Revolution, Germany was once known as the Holy Roman Empire.
    • In the early 1800s, there was no desire to unite and reform all 300 states associated with this empire, as each state had very differentiating stances on social, political and economic factors.
    • However, Napoleon reorganised these states into 39 and in 1810 transformed these 300 into 16 larger states, gaining the title the German Confederation of the Rhine.

However in my opinion economic factors were the most important because the free trade zone created by the Zollverian and efficiency of the railways affected all classes in Germany, highlighting the financial benefits, and creating a growth in German Nationalism.
