    • Student societies (Burschenschaften) grew during the French Revolution and were inspired by a mix of Liberal and nationalistic views to create a more democratic country.
    • In response, the Carlsband Decree of 1819 was passed to suppress protesting which only increased unrest, attempting to ban and censor certain societies.
  • ANALYSIS (FOR)
    • March 1848 a meeting was held in Frankfurt Parliament to decide towards a united Germany despite Fredrick William IV withdrawing his support.
  • ANALYSIS (AGAINST)
    • Many richer Germans (such as Prussian junkers) were opposed to Liberalism as they feared it would cost them wealth and power.
    • Germany failed to unite in 1848, advancements towards democracy reversed, having a negative impact on creating a united Germany.
  • EVALUATION:
    • Until 1850 political ideas were largely discussed only amongst the middle and upper classes, whereas the positive effects of the Zollverein financially benefitted everyone, creating cheaper trade and increasing support for a united Germany.
