  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

    Characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions
  • Obsessions

    Recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted
  • Compulsions
    Repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession or according to rules that must be applied rigidly
  • OCD
    • Obsessions or compulsions are time-consuming (e.g., take more than 1 hour per day) or cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning
    • Symptoms are not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance, symptoms of a medical condition or another mental disorder
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
    Preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in physical appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others
  • Body Dysmorphic Disorder
    • Repetitive behaviors (e.g., mirror checking, excessive grooming, reassurance seeking, skin-picking) or mental acts (e.g., comparing one's appearance with that of others) may have been performed at some point during the course of disorder
    • Clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning is affected by such preoccupation
    • Appearance preoccupation is not better explained by symptoms that meet diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder
  • Hoarding Disorder
    Characterized by the persistent difficulty discarding possessions due to the perceived need to save the items, regardless of their actual value
  • Hoarding Disorder

    • The difficulty discarding possessions results in the congestive and cluttered active living areas and substantially compromises their intended use
    • If living areas are uncluttered, it is only because of the interventions of 3rd parties like family members, authorities, etc.
    • The hoarding causes clinical significant distress or impairment in important areas of functioning
    • It is not attributable to another medical condition and not better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder
  • Trichotillomania (Hair-pulling disorder)

    Characterized by recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors
  • Excoriation (Skin-picking disorder)

    Characterized by recurrent body-focused repetitive behaviors
  • Trichotillomania and Excoriation
    • The Recurrent behavior causes clinically significant distress or impairment in important areas of functioning
    • The Disorder is not attributable to another medical condition and not better explained by the symptoms of another mental disorder
  • Substance/medication-induced obsessive-compulsive and related disorder
    Consists of symptoms that are due to substance intoxication or withdrawal or to a medication
