Atoms, elements, compounds

Cards (15)

  • What are elements?
elements are substances made up of one type of atom
  • What are atoms made from
    Protons, neutrons, electrons
  • relative mass of proton
    1
  • relative mass of neutron
    1
  • relative mass of electron
    very small
  • relative charge of proton
    +1
  • relative charge of neutron

    0
  • relative charge of electron

    -1
  • How can we use the periodic table to determine the structure of an atom?

Top number - atomic number (equal to the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom) Bottom number- mass number (sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom)
  • How are electrons arranged in an atom?
The energy levels closest to the nucleus fill first, the first energy level can hold up to 2 electrons, the seconds energy level can hold up to 8 electrons, the third energy level can hold up to 8 electrons
  • What are metals?
Elements that are typically shiny, malleable, and good conductors of heat and electricity.
  • What are non-metals?
Elements that are poor conductors of heat and electricity, and are typically brittle and dull in appearance.
  • What are compounds?

Substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements.
  • How are compounds formed?
    Through chemical bonding between atoms.
  • How are the properties of compounds different to the elements that
    combined to make them?
When elements are combined new properties are created
