making bromobutane from butanol

• 1. make NaBr (aq) in water and add butanol in round bottom flask
  2. put flask in a beaker of cold water (ice bath)
  3. set up reflux, slowly adding conc. sulphuric acid and mix
  4. remove ice bath and heat for 30 mins
  5. pour distillate and water into separating funnel
  6. use HCl to remove residual product
  7. invert separating funnel
  8. wash bromobutane
  9. separate again and dry with anhydrous sodium sulfate
  10. filter and measure volume of product
• how do you wash bromobutane?

  add one mole of sodium hydrogen-carbonate

  until no more fizzing

  which means remaining acid is neutralised
