Biological Membrane that separates cells from its externalenvironment.
Functions:
compartmentalisation
protection
control of molecule and ion im- / export
cell communication
The bio-membrane consists of 2 lipids. They always have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head that faces outwards, and a hydrophobic (water-hating) tail that faces inwards, away from the water.
There is waterinside and outside the cell, which allows the two lipid layers to form onemembrane as they are pressed against eachother.
