Bio-Membrane and Transport

Subdecks (2)

Cards (10)

  • Biological Membrane that separates cells from its external environment.
  • Functions:
    • compartmentalisation
    • protection
    • control of molecule and ion im- / export
    • cell communication
  • The bio-membrane consists of 2 lipids. They always have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head that faces outwards, and a hydrophobic (water-hating) tail that faces inwards, away from the water.
  • There is water inside and outside the cell, which allows the two lipid layers to form one membrane as they are pressed against eachother.
