  • What is the name of the Dawlish warren feildwork?

An investiafton into longshore drift at dawlish warren
  • What is long shore drift ?

The movement of sediment along the coastline
  • What was our hypothesis ?- Dawlish

1). Long shore drift goes from west from east at Dawlish warren beach
2). The beach will get wider as you go from west to east
  • Why was Dawlish a good location for field work? And disadvantage
Stretch of coastline with a beach

Accesible to the public, get onto site and walk around to collect data

Short distance so we can get there and back and collect data in one day

    Clear evidence of longshore drift

    A tourist spot
  • What are the risks at Dawlish ?
Travel by coach- road traffic accident or accident when getting off the coach

    Weather- sun burn, sun stroke

Walking on the beach- wasps, not appropriate foot wear, far from shops

    Ocean- could get high, drown
  • What can we do to prevent this risks ?
Road accident- remind students to wear seatbelts, carry first aid kits, remind students to look both ways when leaving coach, unload coach in safe position

Sun burn, sun stroke-bring sunscreen, check weather for next day, bring plenty of water, wear appropriate clothes

Wasps, footwear, far from shops- make sure no one is allergic to wasps, don't wear sliders or flip flops, take food and drink in bag

Drowning- check tide times before you leave so u don't get cut off, riptides (don't go in sea)
  • What is primary data ?

    Data we collect ourselves
  • What is secondary data ?
Data collected by someone else or an organisation
  • What is quantitative data ?
    numerical data
  • What is Qualitative data ?

    descriptive data
  • What is stratified sampling ? Advantages and disadvantages
Choose were to take a measurement

    Get the results you need
    Introduces bias
    Subjective when gradient changes
  • What is systematic sampling ? Advantages and disadvantages
Where a sample is taken at regular intervals

    Fair investigation
    Can miss out an anomaly
  • What are our 2 hypotheses?
Long shore drift moves material from west to east

The beach will get wider as you go from west to east
  • How and why did we measure longshore drift ?
Why- to find direction of sand build up

How- got an orange and threw it into a wave , we placed a ranging pole where we threw it, we waited until it came back into shore or after 5 mins and placed another ranging pole. We then measured length between 2 poles

    Sampling- systematic
  • How and why did we measure groyne height ?
Why- to see where long shore is building up

How- measured sand on one side of groyne and the other side to see which had a higher build up of sand
  • How and why did we measure beach profile ?
Why- find relief of land as you go up a beach

How- put ranging pole into land then another where there is relief, use a cilometer and stand at first pole and measure the gradient of the land using the other pole, then leapfrog over the pole and place where gradient changes

    Sampling- stratified
  • What method did I use to present beach profile, pros and cons ?
    Used a line graph
Work out gradient can see beach get wider
Can easily be misinterpreted by scale
  • What method did I use to present groyne height, pros and cons?
    Clustered bar chart
Easy to make and compare, no limit ✅
Hard to see specific height and to compare to other sites ❌
  • What method did I use to present LSD, pros and cons ?
    Bar chart
Easy to view, easy to spot patterns
    Not detailed enough ❌
  • What was our results for LSD ?
Graph shows generally LSD is moving west to east.
    Results were expected
Wind + groyne height support this
This helps prove hypothesis because most sites have correct LSD movement
  • What was our results for groyne height ?
Graph shows sand is more built up on east side showing it's moving west to east
    Results were expected
    LSD supports these results
It tells us that LSD is present in that area
  • What was our results for beach profile ?
Graph shows beaches are generally getting wider although it isn't perfect
    Results were expected
    No other data supports this
    Proves that beach gets wider
  • What does our reunite from wind speed and direction tell us ?
On the day the wind was southwest with 10mph
    Results were expected
    LSD supports this method
    Tell is LSD is present
  • What did we find out ?
Hypothesis 1- partially true, LSD was west to east, groyne height west to east except not trust every time , orange went west to east except twice it went backwards

Hypothesis's 2- true, beach gets wider spearman's rank shows positive correlation
  • What may have influenced my results ?
Wind direction, constructive waves, good weather
  • To what extent were my conclusions reliable ?
Partially valid, results would be different in different weather conditions, haven't got enough data across all the days to prove hypothesis
  • How could the investigation be improved?
    Go back multiple times
    Do more of the beach
Measure 50 meters from groyne to middle
    LSD-intervals
  • Problems with collecting data ?
    Time, had 3 hours
Beach was flat, limited range in beach profile
Tourists, had to skip 4 sites
Hot, couldn't go too far from shops
