  • In case of invariable nouns:
    • In /-s/ with singular agreement; Resembles plural, but are singular idea so require a singular verb
    => Name of games in /-s/
    -> E.g. Cards, Checkers, dominoes, ...
    => Nouns in /-ics/ referring to sciences, branches of study, or activities
    -> E.g. Acoustics, ceramics, gymnastics, phonetics, ...
    => Some proper nouns
    -> E.g. Ardennes, United States, ...
    => Some names of diseases and ailments
    -> E.g. Measles, rabies, shingles, ...
  • In case of invariable nouns:
    • Invariable nouns with plural agreement; Only have a plural form
    => Name of tools or articles of dress
    -> E.g. Binoculars, pincers, flannels, pants, ...
    => Plurals in /-s/
    -> E.g. Clubs (card), woods, clothes, supplies, ...
    • Invariable nouns with collective meaning taking plural verb
    -> E.g. Police, people, youth, ...
  • Deviations of general agreement rule:
    • Singular collective nouns => Both singular and plural verbs are possible
    -> E.g. College, management, press, ...
    • Clauses where Subject NP takes quantifying noun
    -> E.g. Loads, herds, majority, rest, ...
