  • What is psychoanalysis?
    A treatment where the patient verbalises their thoughts through a variety of methods.
  • What does psychoanalysis aim to do?
    To access unconscious, repressed thoughts, which are believed to have led to criminal activity.
    The treatment tried to bring the repressed thoughts to the conscious ,from the unconscious, where they can be dealt with.
  • What happens in the treatment?
    Patient lies on couch facing away from analyst and patient talks about whatever enters their mind.
  • Strength and Limitstion of Psychoanalysis
    Strength - 2010 study concluded it works as well as other psychotherapy treatments I.e. cognitive behaviour therapy.
    Limitation - Creates power imbalance between therapist and client that could raise ethical issues.
