Chain of Evacuation

Cards (4)

  • Regimental aid posts gave immediate first aid to the wounded to get them back to the frontline close by. Men more seriously injured walked or were carried by stretcher bearers to advanced dressing stations.
  • Dressing stations were set up in abandoned buildings or dugouts. They collected men from RAPs with horse-drawn ambulances or stretcher bearers. Staffed by medical officers and nurses by couldn't care for patients for more than a week.
  • Casualty clearing stations collected those seriously injured using motor ambulances. Were set up in factories with surgical and medical wards with nursing staff who had access to mobile x-ray units. They treated patients and either sent them back to the frontline or to a base hospital.
  • Base hospitals were set up in large buildings close to transport networks e.g. ports. They had x-ray departments and treated patients until they could be sent back to the frontline or home.
