Thermodynamics

Cards (4)

  • Internal energy is the sum of all microscopic kinetic energies and potential energies of a molecule within a system.
  • 1st law of thermodynamics states that the increase in internal energy of a closed system is the sum of the thermal energy supplied to the system and the work done on the system.
  • 1st law of thermodynamics:
    increase in internal energy=work done on gas + heat supplied to gas

    ΔU = ΔW + ΔQ

    heat given to system= ΔQ +ve
    heat given by system = ΔQ -ve
    work done on system = ΔW +ve
    work done by system = ΔW -ve
  • WORK DONE ON GAS
    ΔW = F x distance moved (Δx)
    = PA x Δx
    = P x ΔV
