Different Beliefs

Cards (6)

  • Pope John Paul II - “Message to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences” - he accepted the idea that science and religion are not in conflict (no conflict between evolution and creation) - accepted theories of evolution, thought they were influential ideas.
  • Catholics accept scientific views, but believe that Genesis reveals the truth that creation came from God - but reject scientific views if it means that humans aren’t special.
  • Many Evangelical Christians are creationists - interpret the Bible literally as it’s the word of God so they believe scientific theories are false as they contradict the literal understanding of the creation story.
  • Liberal Christians think it makes more sense to view Bible accounts as myths than historical events and accept scientific theories as they give a more accurate picture of the world - agree with the evolution, but believe God planned life to develop this way.
  • Humanist understand the world through scientific theories as they believe religious explanations are unreliable - argue there’s plent of evidence to prove the world firming by itself over time.
  • Reform Jews accept the theory of evolution, but reject the idea that means humans aren’t special and all life is developed by chance - they believe God is the sustainer and provider, and guided creation through the evolution.
