  • What is paralanguage?
    Paralanguage consists of the vocal cues that accompany spoken language.
    ❣️ Rate is the speed at which one speaks.
    ❣️ Pitch is the highness or lowness of the voice.
    ❣️ Volume is how loudly we speak.
    ❣️ Quality is made up of all the other vocal characteristics - tempo, resonance, rhythm, and articulation.
    ❣️ Vocal fillers are the sounds we use to fill out our sentences or to cover up when we are searching for words.
  • What is body movement?
    Body movement also called kinesics is responsible for a lot of our nonverbal communication.

    1.Emblems are body movements that have direct translation into words.
    2. Illustrators accent, emphasize, or reinforce words.
    3. Regulators control the back-and-forth flow of speaking and listening.
    4. Displays of feelings show, through our faces and our body movements, how intensely we are feeling.
    5. Adaptors are nonverbal ways of adjusting to a communication situation.
  • What are facial expressions?

    Facial expressions are the richest source of emotional information. There are seven basic emotions (anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, and surprise).

    Attractiveness is a significant factor in the way people are perceived.
    l. Physical characteristics you can control are called elective characteristics.
    2. Physical characteristics that you cannot change are called non-elective characteristics.

    Clothing has the most variability and the largest number of cues of any adornment feature.
    1. Uniforms identify the wearer with a particular organization, identify rank, and reflect one's willingness to follow norms.
    2. Occupational dress indicates job and image of the wearer.
    3. Leisure clothing sends messages about one's personal identity.
    4. Costumes have symbolic importance in terms of image and norms.
    5. Body adornments, in the form of hairstyles, facial hair, makeup, and body piercing, for example, send messages about the person who wears them.

    The study of space and distance is called proxemics. concerns the way people use the space around them as as the distance they stand or sit from others.

    Territory is the space that we consider as belonging to us, either tetnporarily or permanently

    Intimate distance allows for direct contact where people are no more than 18 inches apart.
  • What is personal distance?

    Personal distance ranges from 18 inches to about four feet and involves casual and personal interaction.
  • What is social distance?
    Social distance is observed when you do not know people very well and has a range of about four to 12 feet

    Public distance is more than 12 feet and is typically used for public speaking or other formal situations
