respiratory system

Cards (10)

  • Respiratory system
    • Made up of: nose + mouth + throat + lungs
    • Responsible for intake of oxygen into the body
  • When we begin exercising
The respiratory system will initiate acute responses to increase the intake of oxygen
  • Respiratory rate (RR)

The number of breaths taken in one minute
  • Tidal volume (TV)

The amount of air that is inspired or expired in one breath
  • Ventilation (V)
The amount of air that is breathed in and out in one minute (V = TV x RR)
  • Pulmonary diffusion
Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the bloodstream
  • Exercise starts
    ventilation -> ↑ pulmonary diffusion
  • Resting
    • RR & TV and therefore V are all at resting level
  • Submaximal exercise
    • TV and RR increase proportionally with each other -> increases V
  • High intensity exercise
    • TV will plateau, beyond this further ↑ ventilation is due to ↑ RR
