Ovary

Cards (20)

  • Mesovarium
Double-folded peritoneum that secures each ovary to a broad ligament
  • Suspensory Ligament
attaches to the lateral edge of each ovary
  • Broad Ligament
Drape of peritoneum that hangs over the uterus
  • Tunica albuginea
    A dense connective tissue capsule.
  • Ovarian Follicles
Found within the cortex of the ovary. Consist of an oocyte surrounded by granulosa cells.
  • Oocyte
a female gametocyte that develops into an ovum after two meiotic divisions
  • Primordial Follicle
most primitive type of ovarian follicle. Consists of a primary oocyte and a single flat layer of follicle cells
  • Secondary Follicle
Forms from a primary follicle. Contains a primary oocyte, many layers of granulosa cells, and a fluid-filled space called an antrum
  • Primary Follicle
Forms from a maturing primordial follicle. Consists of a primary oocyte surrounded by granulosa cells
  • Primary Oocyte
Egg cell that has stopped in Prophase I of meiosis.
  • Vesicular Follicle
Forms a secondary follicle. Consists of a secondary oocyte that has completed meiosis I and has stopped in the metphase stage of meiosis II, many layers of granulosa cells, and an atrum.
  • Secondary Oocyte
An oocyte in which the first meiotic division is completed. The second meiotic division usually stops short of completion unless fertilization occurs.
  • Corpus Luteum
Secretes sex hormones progesterone and estrogen.
  • Corpus Ablicans (1)
Scar tissue in the ovary that forms when the corpus luteum degenerates
  • Corpus Hemorrhagicum
small, blood clot that results from rupture of blood vessels during ovulation
  • dying follicle
  • primordial follicle
single layer of follicle cells plus oocyte
  • mesovarium
    supports ovary
  • ovarian ligament
    attaches ovary to uterus
  • ruptured mature follicle
