  • Macule: <1cm, small, flat, nonpalpable skin color change
  • Vitiligo: patches of skin loses pigment
  • Striae: thin, longitudinal bands of connective tissue that run along the surface of the skin
  • Pallor: Pale, yellowish, or grayish color of the skin.
  • Cyanosis: blue skin due to lack of oxygen in the blood.
  • Jaundice: yellow skin tones in sclera, oral mucosa, palms and soles
  • Acanthosis Nigricans: thickening and darkening in body folds and creases
  • Hemochromatosis: excess iron in the blood, leading to liver damage and cancer
  • Petechiae: pinpoint, round red spots, result of bleeding
  • Purpura: big red spots, blood vessels rupturing
  • Erythema: localized and patchy redness of the skin due to increased blood flow to the skin

  • Plaque: >1cm papule
  • Nodule: large papule w/ dermal extension
  • Tumor: abnormal growth
  • Wheal: a small, raised, itchy area of skin caused by an allergic reaction
  • Vesicles: localized collection of fluid in the skin, <1cm
  • Bulla: vesicles larger than 1cm
  • Pustule: pus-filled vesicle or bulla
  • Cyst: fluid-filled lump underneath the skin, common and harmless
  • Lichenification: hyperpigmentation, thickening of the skin, exaggerated skin lines
  • Atrophy: reduction in epidermal and dermal thickness
  • Ulcer: skin loss with necrotic tissue loss
  • Erosion: discontinuity of the skin, moist lesion, circumscribed, depressed
  • Fissure: cracks in the skin, intense dryness, thickened skin
  • Hypertrophic Scar: remains within the boundaries of the original wound
  • Excoriation: skin picking
  • Keloid Scar: extends beyond the boundaries of the wound and is usually raised above the surrounding skin
  • Impetigo Contagiosum: A bacterial infection that causes a red rash around nose, mouth, hands, and feet.
  • Boils and Carbuncles: Acute rounded circumscribed deep inflammatory nodule of the skin
  • Plantar Warts: Infection with human papilloma virus
  • Herpes Simplex: a common infection that can cause painful blisters or ulcers
  • Herpes Zoster: A painful skin rash caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus.
