  • Is Covid 19 a social phenomena?
    Yes, the pandemic has led to changes in how people work, communicate, and socialize, affecting social structures, healthcare systems, and economies globally. The response to the pandemic, including measures like lockdowns, social distancing, and vaccination campaigns, involves complex social dynamics and interactions. Therefore, COVID-19 is not only a health crisis but also a social phenomenon with widespread and lasting impacts on societies worldwide.
  • Society- constitutes a fairly large number of people; who are living in the same territory, are relatively independent of people outside their area, and participate in a common culture. Community is one of the common examples of a society. May it be in a form of barangay, city, or town, it possesses attributions that are cited in the definition.
  • Culture- from a latin “colere” which means to cultivate. Culture refers to the total lifestyle of people. Including all ideas, values, knowledge, behaviors and material objects that every member shares.
  • Politics- refers to the use of power to determine whose values will predominate, how rewards and resources will be allocated and the manner in which conflicting interest in society will be resolved. It is about how a group of people achieve their wants through the use of power. In order to pursue happiness for the people, society uses power in the manner of creating and implementing rules. Through this, everyone’s lives, liberty, properties, and rights will not be violated. Thus, happiness among individuals is preserved.

    ‘Socius’ (Gr., group of people’) + logos (Gr., Study)
    It is the scientific study of the society which necessarily entails the study of all human activities in the society. It deals with relationships within individuals, how individuals and society affect others, the composition of a group of individuals, and the changes within society.
  • Anthropology
    Anthropos (Gr., ‘Human’) logos (Gr., ‘study’)
    It is the scientific study of human beings and their humanity through the examination of a people’s biological and cultural background. It studies the different sides of humans in terms of physical composition, culture, and language, and how humans of a particular society differ from other humans in other societies. It also examines how humans develop through time.

    Polis (Gr., ‘city/ city-state’) + scire (Gr., ‘to know’)
    It deals with the systematic study of government and politics. e.Its primary goal is to study how the power is formed in a group of people, how the power is utilized and exercised by the ones who possess it, and the impacts of power to the people.

    One cannot understand the complexities of their environment without examining it. In order to grasp the complex world, one must understand it through studying the relevant knowledge about the world
    Example: What are the reasons behind spreading fake news? One must examine the spread of fake news as a social phenomenon so that there would be an understanding of why this phenomenon happens and how it might affect people
  • To respond to the changing world
    People would be able to make judgements as to how the social world would impact them and create decisions that would help in their practical lives.
    Example: How can we respond to the rise of fake news? As a person knows the story behind fake news, one can determine which is considered as fake news and how to react on these on their own such as reporting fake news, informing others about some information that is considered as fake news, so on and so forth.
  • To create a better world
    It helps us appreciate and understand the diverse cultures and societies that make up our global community. This understanding fosters tolerance, respect, and appreciation for different perspectives and ways of life. By studying how societies function and the factors that contribute to social harmony or conflict, we can work towards building inclusive and harmonious communities that respect individual rights and promote collective well-being.
