Overpopulation - Nigeria

Cards (8)

  • Background: Nigeria is a country in West Africa with a population of about 218.5 million people
  • Problem: No hygiene due to sharing - more than 50 ppl share a bathroom
  • Problem: People live in slums, which are often overcrowded and lack basic services
  • Problem: The poor condition of living in slums affects people’s health which lead to the very low life expectancy of 52
  • Cause: Even though contraception has been made free by the government, some people don't have access to it. Also, in some cultures, having over 11 children is seen as ideal while having less than that is not. Nigeria has a fertility rate of 5.5, which is twice the global average.
  • Impact: Over 10 million children can't go to school
  • Impact: High rate of unemployment which results in the migration of a lot of people to cities to search for jobs. The cities are overcrowded and as a result slums are created.
  • Solution: One of the solutions Nigeria has considered would be expanding the floating city to have more space to host more people. They've also made contraception free and these facilities are reaching more and more people everyday.
