Types of conformity

Cards (13)

  • Who suggested the three ways people conform?
    Kelman
  • What are the three types of conformity?
    Internalisation, Identification, compliance
  • Internalisation: A deep type of conformity where we take the majority view because we accept it as correct. Permanent
  • Internalisation is where the individual changes their public AND private opinions/behaviour
  • Internalisation is permanent because attitudes have been internalised and the change in opinion/behaviour persists in the absence of the majority
  • Identification: A moderate type of conformity where we act in the same way as the group because we value it - we don't necessarily agree with everything they believe though
  • Identification is a moderate type of conformity
  • Compliance is a superficial type of conformity
  • Compliance is simply 'going along with others' in public and not changing private opinions/behaviour
  • Compliance means a behaviour stops when the group pressure stops
  • Compliance: A superficial and temporary type of conformity where we publicly agree with the majority but privately disagree with it
  • Identification means we publicly change our opinions/behaviour to be accepted by the group, but we don't necessarily agree with it
  • Identification is to conform to the opinions/behaviour of the majority because there's something we value about it
