• frames with number of long needles
• frame is lowered into open quadrat and any plants touching needles are recorded
• if a frame has 10 needles, move it 10 times in each quadrat to give 100 readings
• each plant recorded as touching needle will have 1% cover, estimate percentage cover of each plant from results
