mods and rockers

• two youth subcultures with their own distinct style and traditions
• mods dressed in Italian suits, liked jazz and used mopeds, mostly middle-class youth
• rockers, mostly working class, wore jeans and leather jackets, liked rock & roll and drove motorbikes
• in 1964 mods and rockers had fights on beaches like Brighton and Bournemouth
• although Cohen states the incidents were unpleasant and at times frightening, the level of violence was low and conflict and intimidation was also low
