UK Migration Controls

• 2010: 5 tier point system introduced in UK to helps control immigration by checking econ migrants possesses skill/resources that UK needs

  e.g Tier 1 migrants must be prepped to invest > £2mn in UK or possess 'exceptional talent'
• Incoming UK gov. of 2010 pledged to cut net migration to 100,000 people per year
• Net migration pledge never met because:

  • Fewer British citizens left UK to live overseas since 2008 global financial crisis
  • £-€ exchange rate weakened due to cost of living in eurozone increasing for UK citizens
  • EU immigration fell after 2016 but immigration from outside EU increased
  • Refugees allowed to remain in UK under human rights law
