  • Why leading questions affect EWT
    When a participant gets a leading question using the verb 'smashed', this encourages them to estimate a higher speed. Loftus and Palmer carried out another experiment that supported the substitution explanation; the wording of the question changed the participants' memory of the event. Participants who originally heard 'smashed' were later more likely to report seeing broken glass.
