Japan was trying to expand to the west and modernise so wanted Port Arthur which Russia had control of
Russia sent more troops to port Arthur upsetting Japan
russia was bigger, stronger and had more resources than japan
Russia and Japan tried to negotiate but it didn't work
port Arthur was isolated form Russia so when they tried to get there they accidentally fired at British ships meaning they had to take a long route
russia lost port Arthur against a less organised and smaller army and navy as Nicholas was certain they would win so didn't send enough troops
led to the 1905 revolution in st Petersburg as the were sick of Nicholas and his arrogance
what was the treaty of Portsmith
russia surrendered and gave port Arthur to Japan
