• Japan was trying to expand to the west and modernise so wanted Port Arthur which Russia had control of
• Russia sent more troops to port Arthur upsetting Japan
• russia was bigger, stronger and had more resources than japan
• Russia and Japan tried to negotiate but it didn't work
• port Arthur was isolated form Russia so when they tried to get there they accidentally fired at British ships meaning they had to take a long route
• russia lost port Arthur against a less organised and smaller army and navy as Nicholas was certain they would win so didn't send enough troops
• led to the 1905 revolution in st Petersburg as the were sick of Nicholas and his arrogance
