    • In 1840 France wanted to extend the Eastern frontier, which United Germany as a country. It was the first time after Napoleon had invaded 'Germany'.
    • Many nationalists did not like the idea of the French in their country and wanted them out.
    • The German princes stirred up nationalistic feelings in the German population to help raise armies to drive Napoleon's forces out of German territory. This was aided by the development of nationalist societies within the German universities.

    • Allied victory at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813 was partially a result of successful political and military cooperation between the German states.

    • 'Germans' started seeing themselves as a United Germany because they had the same view of the French. Working together to get rid of the French helped them feel united.

    • The support for the nationalism of the individual Princes was temporary – only to drive Napoleon out.
    • The German princes were more concerned with protecting their power and influence rather than any movement towards unification

    • Many of the changes being demanded were a result of the Industrial Revolution and not the French Revolution.
