Required practical 1: Microscopes

• Step 1 : First we place the slide onto the stage and use the clips to hold the slide in place
• Step 2 : Then select the lowest power objective lens (4x) and position the objective lens so it almost touches the microscope slide by slowly turning the coarse focussing dial
• Step 3 : look at through the eyepiece and slowly turn the coarse focussing dial increasing distance between the objects lens and the slide until the cells come into focus
• Step 4 : use the fine focusing dial to bring the cells into a clear focus
• Total magnification = magnification of objective lens x magnification of eyepiece
• Magnification = size of image / size of real object
