  • Three reasons for war: Greed, self-defence and retaliation. Only self-defence is acceptable to Christians
  • Just War Theory: must have a just cause, declared by the correct authority, intend to defeat wrongdoing, be a last resort, have a reasonable chance of success and must be proportional
  • Salvation by Grace: we are saved from sin by Jesus' sacrifice
  • Salvation by Good Work: we are saved from sin by doing good deeds and by following the teachings of the Bible
  • Liturgical Worship: follows a set structure
    Example: Eucharist
    Advantages: Led by a priest therefore closer to God, routine/familiar, keeps focus on God
    Disadvantages: Repetitive, less personal connection to God
  • Non-Liturgical Worship: doesn't follow a set structure
    Examples: Quakers, feel that they are moved/inspired by the Holy Spirit to share
    Advantages: not led by anyone, reactionary, learn from others (community)
    Disadvantages: no clear focus, no sacraments
  • Informal Worship: a denomination of non-liturgical worship
    Examples: concert with religious music, singing + dancing, speaking in tongues
    Advantages: encourages younger/more people to become Christian, more engaging
    Disadvantages: can lose its meaning and be less about God
  • Mission: sent abroad and have a specific target/goal, help struggling communities, believe they have been sent to tell people about Christianity and encourage others to become missionaries too
  • Evangelism: less formal and more local than mission, aims to show God's teachings through action, youth groups, charity work and community projects
  • Christian Aid:
    • helps the refugee crisis
    • challenge systems that favour the rich
    • tackle sources of poverty
    • pray for poor communities abroad
    • immediate relief from disasters
    • send envelopes annually to homes in the UK to collect money
  • Tearfund:
    • focus where the need is greatest
    • provides self-help .eg. build wells for clean water
    • encourages young people to take a gap year to go abroad and help with various projects
    • creates churches at the centre of the local community
  • IACTS:
    I=intercession, praying on behalf of others
    A= adoration
    C= confession
    T= thanksgiving
    S= supplication, asking God for help
  • Prison:
    • makes no reparation for crime
    • retribution, deterrence and reformation are all achieved
    • some feel it doesn't do enough to reform
    • expensive
    • alternatives are community service or medical care for addicts and mental illnesses
    • some feel it is not enough of a deterrent
  • Corporal Punishment:
    • physical punishment
    • focus on retribution and deterrence
    • some feel it is inhumane and goes against human rights
  • Community service:
    • criminals fix their crimes and help the community
    • cheaper
    • might not be severe enough to stop them from committing crimes again
  • Sanctity of life: Human life is sacred and should be protected. it is sacred because we are made in God's image. Catholics, mainly, are completely against abortion and euthanasia as only god has the right to take away life, prefer a hospice or palliative care
  • Quality of life: How good your life is .eg. health or financial situation. CofE are more lenient and accept abortion and euthanasia depending on the circumstances and if it is the most loving thing to do
  • Immanent- God is present in the world and is involved in the world.
  • Transcendent- God is beyond human understanding and is unknowable.

  • Stewardship: Christians have a duty to look after the environment on behalf of god and future generations, they can show this by campaigning for environmental charities or reduce waste and recycling
  • Dominion: The idea that God has given humans the power to rule over the world as we are made in His image, Christians believe that this allows them to use natural resources such as coal to make their lives better
  • Special revelation: God reveals themselves through remarkable experiences to a specific person or group by visions or dreams
