  • Types of LTM: Tulving
Tulving performed brain scans on 6 volunteers and found that when ppts use their episodic memory, their frontal lobe was active and when they use their semantic memory, their back cortex was active. This shows that different types of long-term memory use different stores, which supports the types of LTM.
  • Types of LTM: De Renzi et al

Studied an Italian woman who had an episode of encephalitis herpes which affected her left temporal lobe. This severely affected her semantic memory, but not episodic memory. This shows that different types of long term memory are in different stores, which supports types of LTM by suggesting that semantic and episodic memory are in different areas of the brain.
  • Types of LTM: Squire and Kendall
Squire and Kendall found that the cerebellum is crucial in the early stages of motor skill development, procedural memories. It is necessary for co-ordinating specific movements that help with motor skills. This shows that the cerebellum is responsible for procedural memories.
  • Types of LTM: Heindal
Heindal investigated the memory and learning of people with Huntingtons disease. They found that patients had no problem with learning new facts and knowledge (declarative memories) but couldn't learn new motor skills (procedural memories). This shows that Huntingtons disease affects different areas of the brain, indicating that there are different types of LTM.
