There are three types of conformity;
internalisation
,
compliance
and
identification
Internalisation
Public and
private
change in beliefs due to
accepting
group
norms
Identification
Public and private change in beliefs due to wanting to be
apart
of the
group
, caused by
normative
social influence.
Compliance
Public
change in beliefs, opinion and behaviour when in
group
setting
but does not change when
removed
from
group
setting.
There are two explanations for why people conform;
normative social
influence and
informational social
influence.
Normative Social Influence
People conform because they want to be
accepted
by the group and
fit
in with the
group
norms.
Informational Social Influence
People conform because they believe those in the group are better
informed
than they are.
