  • There are three types of conformity; internalisation, compliance and identification
  • Internalisation
    Public and private change in beliefs due to accepting group norms
  • Identification
    Public and private change in beliefs due to wanting to be apart of the group, caused by normative social influence.
  • Compliance
    Public change in beliefs, opinion and behaviour when in group setting but does not change when removed from group setting.
  • There are two explanations for why people conform; normative social influence and informational social influence.
  • Normative Social Influence
    People conform because they want to be accepted by the group and fit in with the group norms.
  • Informational Social Influence
    People conform because they believe those in the group are better informed than they are.
