  • The effects of loneliness and isolation are some of the most prevalent ideas within A Christmas Carol and Dickens presents Scrooge as an isolated character to the reader right from the start. Dickens depicts the loneliness Scrooge has carried with him from childhood to adulthood as a heavy burden which determines his actions, and also as a catalyst for his eventual transformation. The overarching theme of isolation mirrors the struggles of the poor, emphasising the belief that characters are trapped in a flawed system, which Dickens writes about in order to bring about social change.
