    'solemn' emphasises the seriousness of Scrooge's situation and how he must follow the ghosts and decide to change. Scrooge is filled with anxiety about what he's going to see as deep down he's aware the actions in his life leading up to this moment all have a negative impact on his future.

    this quote also sets up the mysterious and tense buildup towards the realisation at the grave at the end of the stave highlighting exactly what goc yet to come represents

    a semantic field of darkness which opposes the light from the previous ghosts
  • 'slowly, gravely, silently'

    use of adverbs to show how both the ghosts and Scrooge's fears are approaching which frightens both Scrooge and the reader as it's how we feel when our fears get closer to us - Dickens is haunting victorian audience with consquences to persuade them to change
  • 'stronger yet'

    Scrooge is able to hold his ground against yet to come as he can control his future. however this quote emphasises the ultimate power the spirits have and how Scrooge cannot prevent his death but has to learn to live a good life and leave a good legacy as death is inescapable
